Why Do We Do Theology

  • Theology: In order to develop in righteousness and exalt God, it is necessary for followers of Christ to undergo a transformational journey in which we strive to understand God via the Bible and the cosmos and then implement what we discover in our everyday lives.
  • Theology as a Necessity: (Matthew 7:24–27) 24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” – NLT

Reasons We Theologize

  1. Deuteronomy 11:1 and Psalm 1 both refer to obedience as a demonstration of our love for God and as a means of receiving God’s blessings.
  2. Love for God with all of one’s being (Mark 12:28–34).
  3. To follow Jesus and create disciples (Matthew 28:16–20).
  4. For the sake of worship and transformation (Romans 12:1-2).
  5. Making wise decisions is only one aspect of developing virtue; we must also cultivate our thoughts, emotions, and passions (Titus 1:1, 2 Pet. 1:3-11).
  6. Psalm 19 describes how to develop wisdom, yet Ecclesiastes 8:17 warns that intelligence, especially human wisdom, has its bounds. and Isa. 5:21 warns against becoming smart in one’s own eyes.

How Do We Do Theology?

  1. With joy, as an act of worship – Psalm 119: 1-2, 7, 14-16; Psalm 147:19-20
  2. With humility – Psalm 25:9, Psalm 149:4; Prov. 11:2; Isa. 6:1-7; Isa. 55:8-9; James 4:6; 1 Pet. 3:8
  3. Asking the Holy Spirit to lead us and enlighten our thoughts via prayer
